In the states it’s Christmas season, but here everything is lit up with lights year round. Still, I've managed to put myself in the Christmas mindset with music, and decorating up my classroom with tinsel, lights, and a little tree :)
More adventures were had this evening as I went out with my language teacher for dinner/language practice. Before eating dinner we walked around, looked in shops, and she bought me some chou dou fu (stinky tofu). This is a food which I have often smelled, and never tried until now. It is something which my teacher really enjoys and she was eager for me to try it. To me, it pretty much smells like sewer, so while outwardly I appeared calm and polite, inwardly I was bracing myself (and my stomach) for the worst. Just from the smell I was worried I might gag, but I actually managed it ok. Turns out it doesn’t taste quite as bad as it smells. Though it’s not something I would voluntarily eat again. At dinner I also partook of shrimp with the legs and tails still connected (I did take the heads off as I couldn’t stand having the eyes staring back at me). So...it was a lovely evening trying new things, and enjoying the night sights of the downtown city. The old style architecture, lanterns, canals winding through houses,...it was beautiful.
